Music Tuition with James Rawlinson DipABRSM
I am based in Pokesdown, Bournemouth (very close to Pokesdown Station in a purpose built teaching studio) and provide Saxophone Lessons, Clarinet Lessons, Flute Lessons and Music Theory to all ages and abilities, Beginners to Advanced, with an equal emphasis on Classical, Jazz and Contemporary Saxophone. I am CRB checked, have the NSPCC Child Protection Awareness Qualification and have full Public Liability Insurance as a member of the Musicians Union. I attended the Royal Academy of Music in London and have 20 years of teaching and playing experience. Unlike having lessons in music schools you are taught by me and no one else, regularly and with a tailor-made lesson plan designed to suit you as an individual.
I aim to give my pupils a broad education getting them ready to deal with most music that is thrown at them in musical life as well as the skills to go out and enjoy playing their instrument with others.I host an ABRSM Special visit twice a year in Southbourne and offer the chance to my pupils to study towards ABRSM Graded Exams in both Classical and Jazz subjects and so far maintain a 100% pass rate. Many of my past pupils have gone on to music college gaining places at Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, Trinity, London College of Music, Royal Welsh College of Music, Royal Northern College of Music, Guildhall School of Music & Drama.
Educational and School Visits
I am musical director of the Forza Saxophone Quartet. The Sax Quartet plays in and around the local area and also provides educational visits to Schools and Colleges. Our repertoire is varied and can be tailored to suit the occasion. For more information about this or to hire the Quartet please visit www.forzaquartet.com
I run JazzSmart workshops – www.jazzsmart.com which runs Saxophone and multi-instrument Jazz and Big Band Workshops for all applicable instruments, including Saxophone, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano, Guitar, Bass & Drums. This year (2016) we have been lucky enough to work with Krzysztof Urbanski as well as past years Derek Nash, Andy Scott, Mike Hall, all as our guest tutors
If you fancy playing in a jazz ensemble I also co-run the Coda Jazz Orchestra in which we rehearse weekly to improve sight-reading and ensemble playing.
I am an enthusiastic, experienced (20 years) and creative music teacher with a proven track record of getting the best from my pupils. I am able to demonstrate a high level of professionalism, musicianship and encourage and inspire young musicians to achieve their musical goals. I am currently head of woodwind at a prep school in Hampshire and also teach from my own private studio in Southbourne, Dorset which is easily accessible by public transport (Pokesdown Train Station and main bus routes).
